Office News

We are delighted to announce that Anna Marrion has joined the team. Anna is an experienced Architect who has previously worked with an award winning London practice. She lives locally and we are already enjoying her input.

During the COVID-19 lockdown we are open for business as usual.  So please contact us if you have a project you’d like to discuss.

Historic building brought back to life

We completed this restoration and extension project towards the end of last year and we’re really pleased with the result. The brief offered many challenges, not least persuading the conservation officer that a contemporary addition to a fine Grade II listed house was just what it needed to become a modern family home. The building was in a bad way when we started to work with our clients, who wanted to maximise the floorspace that could be achieved on this desirable but tight town-centre site. We created a design that included a 3-storey extension and a new entrance, accessed by a bridge flying over a glazed basement below. The basement rooms now have direct access to the south-facing garden so light fills these spaces. What had been a collection of disjointed and small, gloomy rooms, many of which were uninhabitable, has now been transformed into a luxurious town house that is unique and exciting, where new and old work together.

We’re 15 years old

It seems hard to believe, but Milton Architects was founded exactly 15 years ago when Mike left Hampshire County Architects for an uncertain future, starting out in the back room of the family home. Fortunately we’ve moved on a bit since then and all seven staff now work from our office in the centre of Marlborough. This photograph is of our first commission – a three classroom extension to a primary school in Devon that won an architectural award when it was completed in 2008. We’ll have a party when lockdown’s over!

Lockdown in the garden

At Milton, we are all so lucky to have lovely gardens in these difficult times. With work and home life all happening under the same roof we’re appreciating our gardens more than ever, providing a safe place to keep us healthy and happy, and for those with kids the freedom to go a little crazy in the fresh air! With some keen vegetable growers in the team the recent spell of warm spring weather has been well timed, allowing us to kick start our cultivation. With planting beds dug, seeds sown and supports in place, it’s always exciting when the early crops peek up above the soil. We now look forward to sharing the fruits of our labour when we’re all back in the office.

News ….

Milton Architects have recently obtained planning consent for Avebury Sports and Social Club. The brief was to extend the existing club house. The design was simple, but the club is unique being located directly adjacent to the largest megalithic stone circle in the world and in the heart of a Unesco world heritage site. We really enjoyed working on the community funded project and supporting the committee through the tricky planning process. They are crowd funding the extension and you can follow their progress on the  website – http://www.avebury-club.co.uk/
