Congratulations to Eleanor and Tim on the birth of their daughter Imogen. Eleanor, and her pastries, will be missed in the office while she is on maternity leave.
We are very excited that Natasha has recently joined us as an RIBA Part 1 Architectural Assistant.
We are delighted to have completed this cantilevered waterside extension. An unexceptional brick house, dating from the 1980s, was crying out for an extension that would root it more effectively in the landscape and provide a contemporary living space. Extending the house by creating a bold architectural statement was a key part of our client’s brief. Because of the home’s location on the banks of a mill stream, the overarching goal was to achieve our architectural vision while preserving the natural environment. The watercourse has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Although the extension is modest in scale, it delivers a powerful design statement. Anchored to the foundations of the existing house via a steel-framed platform, the garden room oversails the riverbank, so it appears to float above the water. The simple, elegant lines of the interior provide the perfect foil to the cedar-clad outer which incorporates a breakfast deck and is designed to weather into the landscape.
We have been working on a wonderful Victorian vicarage deep in an ancient forest. The refurbishment of the house and the creation of an oak-framed barn is on track and should be completed in early 2020. Our client commissioned The Wooden Treehouse Company to create this amazing treehouse in a mature beech in their garden. Ian Bond designed and built this wonderful structure making the best use of the site.
Christmas is coming …
With Christmas just round the corner we suggest a perfect gift for the person who has everything. A course at the The Woodspeen Cookery School. They run a range of courses in a beautiful setting and after all the hard work you can pop over the road to the restaurant for a Michelin star meal. We completed the refurbishment of the restaurant in 2015 and further works were completed on the cookery school building in 2017. We worked together on this project with Softroom and Chef John Campbell.
Milton Architects have recently obtained planning consent for a new, strikingly modern house in the Oare conservation area. Our clients came to us because we have a track record for obtaining consent for contemporary residential designs within sensitive heritage settings. The house will be built using modern methods of construction and provide a highly sustainable home. The architectural form pays respect to local vernacular buildings whilst achieving a contemporary appearance.
